What Is a Notary Jurat?
A notary jurat is a notarial act in which the signer personally appears before the notary, signs the document in the notary’s presence, and takes an oath or affirmation declaring that the contents of the document are true and correct. Unlike an acknowledgment, a jurat requires the signer to sign during the appointment and verbally swear or affirm the truthfulness of the document. Jurats are commonly used for sworn statements and legal filings.

How a Jurat Works
During a jurat notarization, the notary will:
-
Verify the signer’s identity using valid government-issued photo ID
-
Administer an oath or affirmation
-
Witness the signer sign the document
-
Complete the jurat certificate and apply the notary seal
Pre-signed documents cannot be notarized using a jurat.
